1.3 Where to use ideocalligraphs
I use them in paintings and to illustrate poems, in screen or stencil prints on textiles, engraved on wood sculptures and reindeer horn and incised with knife or applied with a brush on pottery. On paper I use a wide choice of Chinese and Japanese brushes, home-cut reed and bamboo pens, felt and fountain pens, charcoal sticks and carpenter's pencils. In short, with anything that writes and on any surface. And I write them left to right, right to left, in columns, groups, clusters or constellations.
The same ideocalligraph, a centimetre high on paper, could be painted or projected on the wall of a building, alone or sharing the space with others. And as in medieval manuscripts, they can decorate the margins of a poem or text.
It is good to bear in mind that everyone is free to use, adopt and develop these ideocalligraphs. There is intentionally no copyright.
